African Natural Products Database (ANPDB)

Natural products (NPs) have oftentimes represented a source of drugs, drug leads or a "source of inspiration" for the discovery of novel drugs. In a recent survey of the African flora, it was shown that this continent could be a huge repository of bioactive NPs with diverse scaffolds and activities. Consequently, many NPs have been extracted from plants used in traditional African medicine and some of which have already been FDA-approved, such as the antimalarial artemimisin.

Here, we present the African Natural Products Database (ANPDB), which is an amalgamation of NP databases from various regions of Africa. Currently, ANPDB comprises of the Northern African Natural Products Database (NANPDB) and the Eastern African Natural Products Database (EANPDB). The NP databases from the remaining African regions are still under construction and/or are not yet incorporated in ANPDB. To the best of our knowledge ANPDB is the largest database of NPs isolated from native organisms of the Africa continent. The data content currently comprises of data sources (covering the period from 1962 to 2019) and was derived from literature assembled from the main stream natural product journals as well as MSc and PhD theses in some African university libraries and selected searches in local African journals. The data covers 6,515 compounds isolated mainly from 1,042 source organisms; mainly plants, with contributions from microorganisms, animals (e.g. corals), and marine sources.

In addition to names and molecular structures of the compounds, we have included information about source organisms, references, biological activities (e.g. antimalarial, anticancer, cytotoxic, etc.) and and modes of action (when available). On the one hand, the entire ANPDB can be accessed via queries on compound names, chemical structures, organisms, or keywords. On the other hand, the data content of a specific region (e.g. EANPDB) can be accessed under the various lists (compounds, families, species or references list). Finally, all chemical structures of the ANPDB can be downloaded from this website and used in virtual screening experiments to identify putative compound-protein interactions.

This database is freely accessible.
